New service by Nokia for OpenColo

Nokia recently revealed its new service, i.e., offering 7220 Interconnect Router (IXR) for data center switching solutions and SR Linux, its network operating system (NOS) to OpenColo.

OpenColo is an international boutique of a data center that offers superior colocation and other hosting services.

Installing Nokia’s switching solution will help OpenColo inflate its rising colocation and hosting operations to support future IoT (Internet-of-Things), 5G, and AI (Artificial intelligence) services. Also, it will allow OpenColo to meet the consumer’s rising needs.

The Nokia data center switching solution includes

  • SR Linux
  • NetOps development toolkit

These above-mentioned switching solutions help automate data center network operations to enhance operational efficacy while reducing risk.

With Nokia’s data center switching solution, OpenColo supports services such as –

  • cloud streaming and data center connectivity
  • bare metal and managed servers

It’s not just a 7220 Interconnect Router (IXR); OpenColo also uses the Nokia 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) to interconnect its data centers with the help of dual optical fiber connections, which are running at 100 Gbps.

Also, OpenColo uses the Nokia 7750 Service Router (SR), based on Nokia FP4 silicon, to offer IP (Internet Protocol) routing within and between its data centers. It also includes peering and interconnection to several service providers.

SR Linux and the 7750 SR comprise similar proven routing rules from the Nokia Service Router Operating System (SR OS). Further, this helps OpenColo offer its consumers more stable and reliable data center switching and internet connectivity. It also gives strength to manage future data centers and peering traffic requirements.

Expert’s view

Scott Brookshire, Chief Information Officer (CIO) of Energy Group Networks (parent company of OpenColo), Chief Technology Officer at OpenColo, commented: “Nokia and its SR Linux was an easy choice. We wanted a solution that was extensible, open, supported telemetry and gNMI, and was provided by a company that transforms networking both on the hardware and software side. Even more, we needed a partner that understands our needs and can work very closely with us to reimagine our architecture and solve some of our biggest problems. We also appreciated that Nokia builds and supports its hardware, so we have a single vendor to manage and work with should we ever run into problems.”

Steve Vogelsang, CTO for Nokia’s IP and Optical Networks Business, commented: “Data center hosting and colocation providers increasingly need open data center switching solutions that scale to support growing business needs and integrate easily into their existing data center operations. In addition, they need the highest capacity and stability for their networks to provide the most reliable services to their customers. Nokia’s data center switching, IP and optical capabilities are powering OpenColo’s data center infrastructure and providing the end-to-end capacity, performance and reliability that OpenColo’s customers depend on and are needed for future services such as 5G, IoT and AI.”
