  • The latest version is described as a “more inclusive, secure, and anonymous device” that delivers almost five times the AI performance of earlier ones.
  • The new Orb is equipped with Nvidia Corp.’s latest Jetson chipset and features more advanced technologies.

The identity-verifying cryptocurrency initiative Co-founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Worldcoin, announced a rebranding and a new version of its iris-scanning Orb.

Recently, Worldcoin has rebranded to World, as the company believes the name Worldcoin “no longer encapsulates the mission of the project — to accelerate every human.” In conjunction with the rebranding, the company launched the “World Network,” which comprises three main components: World Chain, World ID, and Worldcoin. This network is designed to create a “network of real, verified humans built to enable an optimistic future in which humans will continue to be at the center of AI progress.”

World also introduced an updated version of the Orb, a biometric device that scans users’ irises to verify their identities. The purpose of the Orb is to establish a proof-of-personhood system that ensures an individual is a unique human, distinguishing them from bots or AI.

The new Orb is equipped with Nvidia Corp.’s latest Jetson chipset, providing advanced technologies that allow World ID proof of human verifications to scale more quickly and efficiently than ever.

The updated version is characterized as a more “inclusive, secure, and anonymous device,” offering nearly five times the artificial intelligence performance compared to earlier models. Featuring infrared and visible light cameras, the new Orb enhances low-light performance, boosts fraud detection, and improves image security.

It also comes with 5G connectivity, enabling operation in more locations globally. Additional features include a removable SD card for convenient auditing, enabling users to verify that privacy protocols align with the open-source code. Furthermore, the new design utilizes 30% fewer components, facilitating faster assembly and supporting the World’s decentralization goals by permitting third-party manufacturing.

Recent announcements also included the launch of World ID 3.0, which introduces new features such as World ID Credentials and Deep Face.

World ID Credentials enable users to store information from their NFC-enabled passports on their devices through the World App, allowing them to verify details like age, nationality, and passport ownership without disclosing their personal identity. Moreover, Verified Passport holders can claim WLD tokens, where available, even prior to completing full Orb verification.

World ID 3.0 also improves privacy and security with AMPC, an advanced secure multiparty computation setup that offers enhanced protection for users’ data. Another important feature, World ID Deep Face, establishes a more effective system for detecting and preventing online fraud, further safeguarding the World ID ecosystem as it grows.
